Proteolytic Enzymes - The Supplement for Everyone (Almost)
June 30, 2005
By: Dr. Sonja Pettersen N.M.D.

If you did not read the warning in last week’s article, perhaps you should do that now, so that you don’t hurt yourself as you rush off to buy this amazing supplement by the case. To summarize that article: (1) we are all unique individuals with different needs and varying responses to supplements; and (2) be discriminate about what you read.

The wonder-product we are going to talk about today is serrapeptase, it is an enzyme made by silk worms when they are in the larva stage. It’s the enzyme that breaks down the cocoon to free the moth, so you can imagine the potential it has in the body to break down similar fibrous tissue. (NB: No worms have been harmed in the manufacturing of serrapeptase. They have isolated the micro-organism called Serratia E15 that makes the enzyme so that it can be processed commercially.)

The body’s basic mechanism to handle trauma is to create inflammation and then to pave the area over with scar tissue. We use a substance called fibrin as the cement, which is very effective to mend the broken tissue, but it becomes scar tissue which does not function like the surrounding cells and will often impede normal function. When free radicals damage the walls of the blood vessels, the fibrin is laid down to repair it and like a sticky spider web it becomes the foundation for the plaque formation. This kind of connective tissue is laid down anywhere that needs to be fortified and with respect to our blood vessels, it is usually within the vessel wall itself where the first scar tissue is laid down in attempt to reinforce the walls.

When scar tissue builds up in the organs, they have to work harder to overcome the impedance caused by the excess tissue. For example, blood pressure will increase when there is too much scar tissue in the kidneys; Alzheimer’s patients have scar tissue in the brain; liver dysfunction occurs when there is cirrhosis, etc. When the liver and kidneys no longer filter the blood adequately, the blood becomes thicker. Serrapeptase can clean the blood so that its thinner and the circulation is improved, allowing for better oxygen delivery to the tissues, providing it with one of its anti-aging benefits. Many people take aspirin or coumadin to achieve the same effect but these drugs have harmful side effects, such as excess bleeding. Once the viscosity is reduced and the blood vessel walls are healthy, the chances of getting atherosclerosis, a clot, venous stasis, stroke, or heart attack are greatly reduced. Blood pressure will also decrease when there is less sludge in the blood.

Next week we will look at how amazing this supplement is for athletes. You will be greatly impressed that one supplement has so much to offer.
